All physicians and other providers who possess both a state regulatory board license authorizing them to prescribe, dispense, furnish or order controlled substances and a Drug Enforcement Administration Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA Certificate) must be registered to use the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) database no later than July 1, 2016. CURES is a prescription drug monitoring database containing information on Schedule II through IV controlled substances dispensed in California.

CURES Registration FAQs
|I have a DEA license, but I only dispense Schedule V drugs. Am I still required to register for CURES?Yes, you are required to register. The law applies to all practitioners authorized to prescribe, order, administer, furnish or dispense Schedule II-IV controlled substances, even if you do not prescribe or dispense any controlled substances, or only prescribe Schedule V.
|Do current CURES 1.0 users need to re-apply for CURES 2.0 access?No. Existing CURES users do not need to apply for access to CURES 2.0. These users are able to access the CURES 2.0 with their current User ID and password. Upon initial login to CURES 2.0, users are required to update their security questions and answers and re-establish a new password. The user must also review their CURES account profile to verify their information is accurate, make necessary updates, and acknowledge CURES Terms and Conditions. Once this has been completed, the user may begin searching patient prescription information in CURES 2.0.
|I mailed my paper application in to the Department of Justice (DOJ) prior to January 8, 2016, but I have not heard anything about the status of my application. What should I do?Paper applications received prior to CURES 2.0 going live on January 8, 2016 are still being processed by the Department of Justice (DOJ). If you have not received any communications regarding your paper application, you can go online and begin the registration application using the new CURES 2.0 online registration system.
|Is it still possible to use a paper application to register for CURES 2.0?No; CURES 2.0 requires users to complete the application process online. Paper applications are no longer available or accepted by DOJ. Paper applications submitted prior to January 8, 2016 are still being processed (see above).
|I am beginning my CURES registration application online. What basic information should I be prepared with as I start the application process?The address that is on file with the Medical Board of California (MBC) that is associated with your Medical License, and also either your Social Security Number (SSN) or Tax Identification Number (TIN), depending on which is also on file with the MBC that is associated with your CA Medical License number. (Both pieces of information must match MBC records.)
NOTE: Your medical license type refers to the first alpha character in your medical license number (Example: for license A12345, the license type “A” and the license number is “12345”).
|I have completed the first part of my registration application. How long do I have to wait for to receive an email with a secure link to complete the second part of my registration application?An email will be sent within 24 hours of receipt of the first part of the registration application.
|What should I do if I don’t receive an email with a secure link?For technical assistance contact the DOJ CURES Help Desk either by phone or email at 916-227-3843 or firstname.lastname@example.org. If you do not receive a timely response, contact YSCMS at (916) 630-7030 or email@example.com.
|I have just completed parts one and two of my CURES registration application online. Should I print a copy of my “User Registration Confirmation” page which includes the summary of all of my applicant information?Yes. Print your “User Registration Confirmation” page for your records and to review if your application is denied.
|After I’ve completed my CURES registration application. How long do I have to wait to receive an approval or denial?Registration application approvals and denials are sent within 24-48 hours.
|I forgot my username/password combination. How many times can I try to login before my account becomes locked and deactivated?After six unsuccessful attempts to login, the user’s account will be locked and deactivated. The only way to reactivate the account is to contact the Department of Justice (DOJ) Helpdesk at 916-227-3843 or firstname.lastname@example.org who will reactivate the account on the user’s behalf. The response you receive from DOJ will likely be an automated message with instructions for resetting your passwords.
|My CURES registration application came back as denied. What do I do?Use your “User Registration Confirmation” page print-out to confirm your address information and SSN/TIN with the Medical Board of California (MBC). If any discrepancies are found, you may need to update your address information and/or SSN or TIN with the MBC. The address and SSN or TIN on file with the MBC should match the address information and SSN or TIN you enter on your CURES registration application. Once corrected, begin the online application process again and submit a new application. If a second denial is received send an email to email@example.com and to the YSCMS at firstname.lastname@example.org.
|I have tried to call the Department of Justice (DOJ) Help Desk but no one answers. I have sent emails to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Help Desk, but have not received a response. What should I do?DOJ has advised that they are answering inquiries in the order they are received, and have reported a high volume of calls. As a result, many physicians are reporting challenges getting assistance from the DOJ Help Desk. If you have submitted questions to the DOJ Helpdesk regarding your CURES Registration Application and have not received a timely reply, please contact YSCMS for further assistance at (916) 630-7030 or email@example.com.
|What are the internet browser requirements for CURES?CURES users who meet specific web browser compatibility requirements will be directed to CURES 2.0, while those who do not will be routed to the old CURES 1.0 interface. CURES 2.0 users must use Microsoft Internet Explorer version 11.0 or higher, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. Earlier versions of Internet Explorer are not supported by CURES 2.0 for security considerations. CURES 1.0 will continue to be made available to clinical users for an indeterminate time to facilitate uninterrupted access to CURES data while health care systems upgrade to CURES 2.0-compatible browsers.
|The web browser I typically use is not compatible with the browser requirements to register for CURES using the 2.0 site. How do I register?You will need to get access to a computer that has a web browser that meets the CURES 2.0 compatibility requirements to initially complete your registration application using CURES 2.0. Once completed, when you go to CURES using a web browser that does not meet the compatibility requirements, you will automatically be redirected to CURES 1.0 where you can then use your CURES login credentials (username and password) to access CURES 1.0.
Resources for Navigating and Using CURES
Once the multi-step registration process is completed and access to CURES is granted, physicians are encouraged to check CURES as appropriate when prescribing controlled substances. By checking CURES you can find out:
- If your patient is not getting enough medication
- If your patient has other doctors, and prescriptions should be coordinated
- If your patient is getting extra medications that you are not aware of
